The 60-second difference
An OBD2 tracker plugs into your vehicle's diagnostic port — usually under the steering column — and starts reporting within a minute of ignition. A hardwired tracker connects directly to the vehicle's power and ground, takes 15–45 minutes to install, and requires basic wiring knowledge or a fitter.
That difference in install time drives most buying decisions. But it shouldn't. The real question is: what happens after install?
Security: the OBD2 problem
OBD2 ports are standardised and exposed. Any thief with basic knowledge knows to check the port first. Disconnecting an OBD2 tracker takes 3 seconds. Some insurers now explicitly exclude OBD2-only trackers from theft-recovery claims because the device is too easy to find and remove.
Hardwired trackers, when installed professionally, are concealed behind interior panels, under dashboards, or inside the engine bay. A thief would need to dismantle the vehicle to find one — by which time the call centre has already escalated.
Data depth: what you actually get
OBD2 trackers read vehicle data — engine codes, fuel level, RPM — which is genuinely useful for diagnostics and usage reporting. But most fleet managers already get that data from telematics systems. Adding a second OBD2 device just for location creates redundancy.
